Born in 1975, Porto ( Portugal), Ângela is an artist and and independent photography curator, with PHD in Photography and Visual Communication at Universidade do Minho, Portugal about the Indigenous communities of Brazil. She holds a degree in Curatorial Studies and completed a Master’s degree in Photography at Utrecht School of Arts-Holland and a Law Dregree at Universidade do Minho ( 1998).
She have a Pós-doc Research at Escola de Belas Artes Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro Brazil(2020), developing studies on contemporary visual practices that problematize the hybrid forms of photography, in intersection with other languages, such as Painting, Cinema and Literature. Member of the research group NANO New arts Organisms of the School of Fine Arts of UFRJ. (NanoLab), Rio de Janeiro, Brasil.
Ângela Ferreira is Co-Founder of the Portuguese PhotoFestival Encontros da Imagem (2006), an International Photography Festival based in Braga Portugal, which has collaborated as Artistic Director and Curator. In this role she has worked on several solo exhibitions including Malick Sidibé, Viviane Sassen, Christto & Andrew, Brian Griffin, Karen Knorr, Cristina de Middel, Roger Ballen, Ren Hang, Carlos Spottorno, Phil Toledano. She has lectured on contemporary photography throughout Europe and latin American Countries, particularly in Brazil, Uruguay and Colombia, and acted as a curator for both national and international exhibitions.
In 2018 was one of the guest curators of the Beijng Photography Biennale in China organized by the Central Academy of Fine Arts and the Beijing Museum of Art (CAFA Art Museum).
Actually she is Professor at Escola de Comunicação Arte e Cultura ( ECATI- Universidade Lusófona, Lisboa, at Departamento de Cinema e Artes dos Media
and Escola de Arquitetura, Arte e Design da Universidade do Minho.
She was guest Ajdunct Professor 2016-2022 at the Polytechnic Institute of Porto (ESMAD School of Media Arts and Design), where she coordinated the International Summer School and the Pós Graduation in Photobooks.
Since 2017, she is curatorial member of Photography Museum in Fortaleza, Brazil and currently she is artistic advisor of the FotoFestival SOLAR and counselor of the Photography Program at the Secretary State of Culture of Ceará, Brazil.
She collaborates with local and international artists with focuses on the development of cultural exchanges and social problems. She often works with human rights advocates, and as well as being involved as a nominator and juror for the international photographic organizations, festivals and events.
Based in Portugal and Brazil, Ângela works within the scope of narrative transversality, translated into photobooks, a territory where photography expresses its creative potential.
She is co-founder of Nervo_Portuguese Photobook Observatory (2022).
